Social Media Checks for Education

For those in the education sector, recent updates to the statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’, have had a greater emphasis on online searches as part of the safer recruitment process. The guidance advises that an online search is carried out as a pre-employment check to help schools identify online behaviours that may raise concerns about an individual’s suitability to work with children and young people.

Although the government does not currently mandate social media checks, they have acknowledged the importance of online screening and recommends employers consider it during the recruitment process. A social media check can be requested and renewed as and when required, much like a DBS certificate.

Social Media checks identify a candidate’s online presence to look for negative behaviours such as bullying, racism, nudity and excessive bad language. It also identifies potential privacy issues, such as leaking information, and content that could potentially damage your organisation’s reputation.

Social Media checks also look at affiliations with proscribed organisations and groups linked to violence or extremism and how widely a candidate is connected. The risks posed by their connections, and any endorsement of illegal activity such as drugs, theft, weapons and fraud are all presented in a final report. Allowing you, the employer, to make an informed and objective decision.
