What is a BPSS check?

The HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) is a pre-employment checking standard set by the Government for anyone who has access to government assets. The core checks include:

  • Civil servants
  • Temporary staff
  • Government contractors
  • Anyone requiring access to the Public Services Network (PSN)

Fundamentally, the BPSS standard outlines the controls in place to protect reputation, integrity and financial assets by identifying any risk of identity fraud, illegal working and deception.

The BPSS standard is nationally recognised and utilised by many organisations across the UK. It is commonly accepted as the ‘baseline’ of background screening policy.
