Why choose DDC?
DDC’s right to work checking
solution for employers
DDC’s right to work check provides an easy online process to ensure your right to work checks align with Home Office and Immigration legislation. We can reduce your administration burden by providing a streamlined and compliant process. You don’t need any training or prior knowledge of the requirements.
We guide you through the process at every step, with a supportive and knowledgeable Customer Service Team on hand for any questions you may have. For non-UK nationals, we obtain the share code information directly from the Home Office and alert you if you need to recheck a document.
Why are compliant right-to-work checks important?
A right to work check, when completed correctly, provides employers with a statutory excuse against liability for a civil penalty. This means that if the Home Office find you to have an illegal worker, but you have followed a compliant right to work process, you are excused from receiving a potential penalty of £45,000 and £60,000 for repeat offenders.

Digital identity for right to work
Digital identity is a government approved method to verify the identity of candidates remotely during the recruitment process. This means that organisations can partner with an IDSP to obtain the required statutory excuse without having to meet applicants in person.
Using the DDC ID App will streamline the key steps of a right to work check. This will make the process more efficient for everyone.
The applicant can now use their smart phone to scan and read their chip-enabled British passport, and then use the camera to match the pictures in the document.

How do DDC ensure compliant employee right-to-work checks?
Compliance is a core requirement where right-to-work checks are concerned. The systems in use drive this compliance whilst ensuring checks are easy to request and complete. Users are given full guidance at the point of need so no additional training is required. Where guidance changes, we update the systems at no extra cost to ensure ongoing compliance. Key features of DDC’s right-to-work service include:
Statutory excuse
We capture the date and the individual who verified the original document and provide a scanned copy of the document. Giving you peace of mind that your right to work checks are accurate and compliant.
Risk minimisation and fraud detection
The system will detect potential identity fraud using innovative technology and an experienced team of Case Workers.
No more paperwork
All the information is collected digitally and stored securely so you can manage your right to work check and pre-employment screening with ease.

Some common questions
We’ve gathered together a large collection of the most common questions we get asked. You can see them all in our FAQ section. We’ve included a few of the most popular below.
Are DDC a certified identity checking service provider (IDSP)?
Yes. DDC’s digital identity service is certified against the Home Office digital identity trust framework. There are a number of schemes organisations can become certified against the framework and DDC are accredited for both the right to work and DBS schemes.
How will digital identity work?
DDC’s digital identity service works seamlessly with our bespoke and flexible pre-employment screening platform. There are a number of different service options depending on how much or how little you want to be involved. The applicant will be required to nominate their valid British passport. They will then be invited to download the DDC ID app by scanning a QR code. After that it’s a simple three-step process:
Step 1: The applicant uses the camera on their smartphone to scan their document before reading the chip to check all the security features on their identity document.
Step 2: The applicant takes a selfie and completes a liveness test to compare the photo on the identity document.
Step 3: The checks take a matter of minutes and the results are available immediately so the application can be submitted.
A picture of the applicant as checked will appear in your portal, so you can make sure that the same person attends the role. For right to work checks, a copy of the document is provided for you to keep as a record of your statutory excuse.
We have processes and systems in place to ensure seamless integration with the current portal so you’ll know which applicants were checked through digital identity routes, how they were checked and any reasons why they tried and failed. As always, we will fully log everything for your compliance requirements!
How do we complete a manual right to work check?
There are three key steps to a manual right-to-work check. To establish a statutory excuse, you must complete all three steps. These include:
- Obtain – You must obtain the original versions of one or more of the acceptable documents.
- Check – You must check the validity of the document(s) in the presence of the applicant.
- Copy – You must make and retain a clear copy of the document(s) and record the date the check was made.
For some non-UK nationals, you can also complete an online check which follows a different process than a manual check of original documents. Applicants can share their right to work with you by using the Home Office online right-to-work checking service. To view an individual’s right to work online, the applicant must provide a share code to allow you to access the GOV.UK ‘view a job applicants’ right to work page’.
What is a right to work check?
Right-to-work checks are a type of pre-employment check used to establish an applicant’s eligibility to work in the UK before they begin employment. The standards are defined by the UK Government and are designed to ensure a strong and fair working environment across the nation. All employers need to demonstrate that all employees have a right to work. This should be done when they join an organisation (before signing an employment contract), and throughout their employment (you might need to recheck at some point in the future).
