An enhanced DBS check is the highest level of DBS, criminal record check, available in the UK. Used to help organisations make safer recruitment decisions. these checks are subject to the strictest eligibility criteria and are only available for those working in regulated activity.
An enhanced DBS check will show details of any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings recorded on the Police National Computer (PNC), plus a check of the records held by the local police force where an applicant has resided*. An additional check of the barred list can be requested for individuals who are working or volunteering in regulated activity with children and/or vulnerable adults. The information disclosed on an individual’s certificate is also subject to the DBS filtering rules which removes old and minor conviction information, within set time-frames.

The Enhanced DBS check is for roles included in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 plus the Police Act 1997 (Criminal Records) Regulations. The enhanced check is designed for organisations placing individuals in a position of trust with children and/or adults. If the role does not fall within these requirements then an employing/recruiting organisation must not request an enhanced level check, but may wish to opt for a standard or basic level check. The DBS fee for an enhanced check is £49.50 for individuals who are performing a paid role. If you are checking a volunteer, the DBS do not charge an application fee.
