Individuals looking for criminal record checks are restricted to Basic-level checks and cannot request Standard or Enhanced level checks on themselves. This is because the individual is not in a position to make a decision about their own suitability to work in the restricted roles that require the higher level checks. Therefore, a third party such as an employer, is required to make a decision regarding the placement of an individual in a restricted role.
If you are looking to obtain a basic level check, DDC are still able to offer this service. Individuals often ask to clarify their eligibility, so we have provided some answers below.
- Can I check myself or a family member?
- I have been told to get a Disclosure. What do I need to do?
- How do I apply for a Basic Disclosure?
Individuals who simply wish to know what information is held on them should ask at their local police station for a Subject Access Report under the Data Protection Act. This costs £10 and takes about 6 weeks.
